Increase Uptime With Our Excavator Inspection Checklist
Excavators are the workhorses of any job site. With all of that power comes high stress levels; left unchecked, small leaks and cracks can become big, expensive problems. By following an inspection checklist, you can boost safety, head off costly repairs, and increase uptime. Inspect High-Wear Areas
A visual inspection is the most important part of a pre-starting checklist. Take a few minutes to examine the exterior of the excavator, focusing on high-wear areas such as the track drive and the mounts for the boom, cylinder, arm, and bucket. Check out the compartments for the pump and battery, and inspect the frame. As you look at each section, look for cracks, damage, signs of leaks, or unusual wear patterns. Remove any large pieces of debris from the tracks and bucket. If you see any issues, fix them before you start work — with an excavator, early maintenance is the easiest way to prevent costly repairs and downtime in the future.
Check Fluids and Filters
Once you're satisfied that the physical structure of the excavator is in good shape, turn your attention to the fluids and filters. Make sure your engine oil, fuel, transmission oil, and coolant levels are within a safe operating range and top off as necessary. While you're at it, check the air filters and coolers to make sure they're not clogged or damaged.
Inspect the Hydraulic System
Whether you're doing earthwork or lifting heavy items, a hydraulic inspection is a key part of any pre-starting checklist. Look at the lines, connections, and cylinders to ensure that there are no cracks, leaks, or loose links.
Verify Battery Charge
When you stop working for the night, it's easy to forget to disconnect the battery. At the beginning of the day, it's a good idea to do a quick inspection of the battery. Check the charge and electrolyte levels, and make sure that the terminals are clean and tight.
Inspect Interior Controls
The pre-starting checklist isn't over once you get into the cab of the excavator. Once you turn on the engine, spend a few minutes checking crucial systems. Make sure the pedals, seatbelts, clutch, and lights are working. Then, do a quick scan for warning lights. Finally, test out the boom, arm, and bucket to make sure they're moving normally and have a full range of motion.
The full pre-inspection checklist usually takes no more than 10-15 minutes of your day, but it can save a considerable amount of time and money.
